Get Rid Of Musty Smell In Towels – The smell of clothes is something I have struggled with for years. For two teenagers, musty clothes are provided. Due to the high humidity in the summer, we also use old towels because they are always damp on the towel rail.
Our old sewing machine was not helping us. Even though cleaning cycles were run and the door was left open, there was always a foul smell. (We replaced the unit in January and the new washer is much better. It has a drain and is clean under the washer drum.)

Tip – Don’t forget to clean the washing machine regularly! See “Washing Machine Odors – How to Eliminate Odors” for more information. (Don’t put wet clothes in the washing machine – it can smell bad.)
How To Revive White Towels
In this post, we’ll discuss how to remove odors from clothes and towels and freshen up a musty wardrobe. I am also introducing my favorite EnviroKlenz product line. It has amazing antibacterial properties.
My older son likes to wear synthetic sports shorts. After a while they get a smell of mud that doesn’t go away. (I’m sharing below until I find a solution.)
My husband’s great uncle ran a laundry business for many years and used white vinegar to remove stains and odors. It also helps remove hard water and detergents from clothes.
Note: When washing clothes, make sure you use the right type and the right amount of detergent. Soap residue traps moisture, so you’re likely to end up with towels on sweaty clothes and a lingering smell.)

I’ve been using white vinegar (instead of fabric softener) to wash for years. Fill the space with a simple fabric item and you’re good to go. Add 1 cup of vinegar per load for top loaders, 1/4 to 1/2 cup for front loaders.
Some online guides recommend washing stained towels with a full cup of white vinegar (not soap) in hot water to remove moldy odors.
Another classic deodorizer, baking soda, can be sprayed directly onto your clothes in the washing machine. Also, I use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda and fill it up and rinse with white vinegar.
Since body odor is largely responsible for my son’s soft clothes, I thought that cleaning enzymes would help reduce the odor.
Easy Ways To Remove Mildew Smell From Clothes
Synthetic shorts have improved, but not 100%. I was lucky when they removed the smell of pet urine.
The BioClean product was better than the local farm store product because it didn’t smell. Surprisingly, the produce at the farm store had a sweet, fragrant aroma.
In the book “Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Cleanliness,” the author recommends treating heavily soiled towels with borax.
To pre-clean, soak the towel in a tub of hot water and 1/2 cup of 20 mil borax for an hour before washing. Wash clothes as usual.
How To Prevent Smelly Towels
I am a person who likes to dry linen when the weather permits. Exposure to sunlight kills some odor-causing bacteria, and a light breeze helps improve air circulation in all areas.
The problem with using sunlight is the bleaching effect. Over time, this will lighten the clothes, making them look more aged.
Sunlight also destroys elasticity and spandex with repeated exposure, just as plastic makes it brittle. The deodorizing power of sunlight works best on natural fibers like cotton, not so well on synthetics.

A Guide To Storing Linens: How To Keep Storage Smelling Fresh
The results I have gotten with EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer are amazing. Old shots never get old. It smells just fine – no perfume, no masking.
After another wash cycle I saw an improvement. After two washes, the smell was gone. This is the scent I smelled. (And my mother-in-law asked me to throw away those pants, but she only wore them at home.)
This product is marketed to remove odors from new clothes and prevent odors from entering the pad, but it also works well on old, musty clothes.
I gave some of our neighbors a copy of this product to try on their farm clothes. They said that the Butcher clothes they washed with EnviroCleanz smelled better than those washed with bleach.
How To Remove Musty Odors From Towels
The EnviroKlenz product line has been around for five years and can be purchased online and at chemical health care providers.
I have been using about 1-2 tablespoons per load with good results. (Typically you use 1/4 to 1/2 cup for 1 serving.) I can easily get more than 15 servings out of 15 fillings.
What to do if the clothes smell in the room? Of course you can take everything out and wash them, but if you don’t solve the problem, they will get old again.
First, check the structure of the closet and look for mold and mildew. Our houses are being built with difficulty. Less ventilation = more risk of mold and mildew.
How To Clean Towels And Get Them Really Clean With Baking Soda And Vinegar
Cabinet corners are notorious for mold and mildew growth and are easy to overlook. If you find mold or mildew, you can use the all-purpose cleaner and carpet cleaners in the DIY Natural Cleaners post to help clean it up.

Shares, pins and helpful comments are always appreciated. You know how your towels start to smell like a wet dog after years? You wash them, dry them, and when you take them out to use them, it feels like you are rubbing yourself with a dirty cloth. If you don’t want to throw in the towel and start over, try this quick, easy, and inexpensive solution:
How To Get Rid Of That Musty Towel Smell!
First, turn the washing machine to the worst setting. Add two cups of distilled white vinegar and cover with a towel. Don’t put soap or anything else, just vinegar and a towel. Start the wash cycle. After the cycle is complete, leave the towel in the washer and repeat, this time using one cup of baking soda and nothing else. After this cycle is complete, remove the towel and dry completely. If it’s warm enough for the liner to dry, that’s fine, otherwise throw it in the dryer and make sure it’s completely dry. Repeat every few months to maintain effectiveness.
Your towel will smell like… well, nothing – it’s the best smell in the world when you tend to attract a mold attack.
