How Do You Charge An Electric Car At Home – The number of plug-in electric cars on North American roads grows every year, and with them come new buyers.
Every new electric car driver has something to learn, so we’ve put together some tips on how, where and when to charge your new plug-in vehicle.
How Do You Charge An Electric Car At Home
Whether you’re already an owner, considering buying a new or used battery-electric or plug-in hybrid, or just curious, here’s what we need to know.
Csun Ev Charging
Note that this guide is for download in North America; If you are in Europe or Asia, there are some differences that we will not cover in this article.
Level 1 or 120 volts: The “charging cord” that comes with every electric car has a standard three-prong plug that goes into any properly grounded outlet with a connector on the other end of the car’s charging port. Among them is a box of electronic circuits
This is the slowest charging method, although plug-in hybrids charged with smaller batteries (for example, 4-18 kWh) may be able to charge for a few hours overnight.
The charging cable tests the circuit to make sure it is properly grounded and that the current is strong enough for the charger.
Ev Charging Levels Explained
Most have colored lights to indicate if the car is charging after being plugged into the wall and then into the car’s charging port.
Level 2 or 240 volts: Most home and public charging stations operate at 240 volts, and their cables reconnect to your car’s standard charging port.
If you have a charging station installed in your home, it requires the same type of wiring as an electric stove or tumble dryer.
This is at least twice as fast as Level 1 charging, often faster due to the higher amperage of the circuit.
Electric Car Charging: The Basics You Need To Know (updated)
Charging stations should be installed on at least a 40 amp circuit, but if you want to future-proof the wiring, 50 or 60 amps is fine.
Typically, owners of battery electric cars like the Nissan Leaf require a Level 2 home charging station for overnight charging.
Many plug-in hybrid drivers – including Chevy Volt owners – are often plugged into a standard 120 volt charging cord for several hours overnight.
DC Fast Charging: DC fast charging sometimes incorrectly called “level” charging uses direct current (DC) instead of household alternating current (AC) and is very efficient.
How Long Does It Take To Charge An Ev With Level 3 Charging?
This means that only public sites dedicated to DC charging, often on highways, will have to install dedicated high-power lines because of the higher costs.
Unlike the first two types of charging, where every car you charge in the US
Note that with the exception of Tesla, DC Fast Charging uses either a dedicated charging interface (CHAdeMO) or a larger interface that includes a conventional Level 2 outlet (CCS).
First of all, not all electric cars have fast charging – only a few plug-in hybrids offer it – so make sure your car has one and, if so, what standard it uses.
How To Charge An Electric Car
We strongly recommend that you get a smartphone app where you can find charging stations where you can take your electric car.
One of our favorites is PlugShare It allows users to rate and provide advice on individual stations, but it also includes places where homeowners offer their own charging stations for other EV drivers to use.
Finally, we would be reliable to point out that there are certain etiquettes that all plug-in car drivers must observe to help each other.
First, there’s the problem of “ICE-ing,” where an internal combustion engine car parks in a charging spot and blocks plug-in drivers from entering — either accidentally or maliciously.

Your best bet is to see if there is a way to pick up a local security guard or driver if not, leave a matter-of-fact but polite note that their actions prevent you from getting off – where their only purpose was to park.
However, some charging points are not well-marked, while others are near buildings and therefore in more desirable locations, which increases the likelihood of selfish behavior.
Charging points are not intended to provide free parking for electric car drivers, just as any petrol or diesel driver would expect to park at a petrol pump for hours.
Second, if you can’t move your car by unplugging it after the charge is finished, you can leave a note for other plugged-in drivers. It usually says something like, if the green light on my dashboard is on, you can unplug the charging cable.

However, some electric cars now have locks that require a key to unlock the power cable to make sure your car is working
Third, remember that if your car has 30-50 miles left on it—and you plan to drive less—you might want to wait until you get home. Although the download is free
Some may be on their last mile and need a recharge more than you
Be aware, for example, that some EV drivers believe that plug-in hybrid drivers should always settle for their needs because a plug-in hybrid can use its engine to get home, but a battery-powered car can. T.

And you’ll likely find EV drivers very informative, willing to talk about their cars and what they like about them, and maybe even offer you a ride.
Some of the electric cars are sold to first-timers: they drive the car, decide that they like it, learn about the cheaper price of electricity per kilometer compared to gasoline, and the seed is sown.

Most owners charge at home or at work. The process takes hours, which may sound like an unbearable effort for owners of gas-powered cars, but it seems too much for current owners.
More convenient than a trip to the gas station because they do other things – sleeping in many cases – while the battery is charging.
The slowest way to charge is a standard 120-volt outlet, which adds only a few miles of range per hour.
