We analyzed 9.18 million data points from thousands of gyms to compile this information for you. Yes, it’s a long one, so be prepared for some extra tips.
We reviewed monthly rates in the United States from January 2019 to September 2022.
As you can see from the chart above, the average cost of a gym membership in January 2019 was $112/month. During COVID-19, you can see the numbers drop significantly to around $100/month, which is 10% off the average price.

In fact, the average monthly gym membership price has increased by 14.33% from January 2019 to August 2022.
You might be surprised how much the average cost of a gym membership has gone up, but it hasn’t increased at the rate of inflation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of living has increased by 17%+ since January 2019, which is almost 3% higher than the rate at which gym memberships have increased.
Across each country on the map below, you can see the average cost of participation in that country.
Our key takeaway from this information is that insurance is still very important to business owners. Wondering why membership fees haven’t risen as quickly as the cost of living? Maybe gym owners don’t want to lose customers, so they raise prices for only a fraction of the money needed to grow their business.

We’re all busy working, sleeping, watching Netflix, and (re)working out, which isn’t the break in life we’re looking for at the gym.
Reasons To Ditch Your Gym Membership
Both countries have their New Year’s resolutions. Of course, millions of Americans sign up for gym memberships but don’t use them.

From a health perspective, we seem to be in trouble. But that is the personal finance sector. So I’m here to be one
Here’s why we should all be spending more time in the gym. Let’s put down the gym shoes for a few minutes and focus on money.
How Much Does It Cost To Start A Gym?
According to a study by the Statistical Brain Research Institute, the average gym membership in the US costs $58 a month. That’s $696 a year.
According to National Healthcare Expenditure data published by CMS, the average healthcare expenditure per person is $10,348 per year.
From the beginning, something was clear. Where are more opportunities to save? Medical expenses.
Of course, it’s not that simple. Health insurance covers most of these costs, so your out-of-pocket costs are usually low. CMS estimates ~$1,105 per person (not including health insurance costs).
How Much Do Americans Spend On Health & Fitness?
The average annual cost of weight loss in the US is $478 (higher than the average of $1,105). The price is $524 for women and $432 for men.
The average annual cost of obesity is high: $3,763 (higher than the average cost of $1,105). The price is $4,879 for women and $2,646 for men.
To show the savings you can get, I’d like to look at the cost of a gym membership in different scenarios.
For this first analysis, let’s imagine there are 3 people, all 25 years old. One is average weight, second is fat and third is obese. Now suppose everyone lives in the same distribution (average/obese/obese) for the next 40 years.

I know there is more to a person’s weight than just going to the gym. Diet and genetics also play a big role. But for the purposes of this analysis, I’ve simplified it to the bare bones.
A friendly disclaimer: these results are based on my own assumptions. Each scenario involves the following considerations:

I have to say that I was surprised at the magnitude of the results. Some Americans would save more than a million dollars if they could reduce their health care costs. Who knew?!
So far it has caught people’s attention. It’s true that many of us can improve our financial goals by improving our health.
However, we should not forget that health care costs have become a large part of spending in America as well. From 1960 to 2016, the share of healthcare spending in GDP increased from 5.0% to 17.9%!
This picture is likely to persist as the population ages. Per capita health care spending has increased significantly (nearly 7000% – if you read that right) over the same period.

Will legislators work to lower drug prices? I’ll believe it when I see it. Will CMS increase incentives for providers to reduce overall health care costs? Maybe one day.
At this time, the only way to reduce the cost of health care per person is to reduce the use of services (ie healthcare).
Therefore, I can argue that it is your American responsibility to get a gym membership – and use it!
Look bad When I’m not wearing contacts or glasses, I can’t tell how many fingers you’re holding up from 3 feet away. Now I can see perfectly. The result was miraculous. But is it a worthwhile financial investment?
